Butterflies were already fluttering in her stomach as Hannah made her way through the crowd of guests, her hand on Lord Pattonâs arm. She had been so caught up in the excitement of finally finding Lord Walton, that she had not considered for a moment that she would be required to make introductions.
However, with Lord Patton by her side, Hannah felt herself grow stronger within herself. He needed her to do this, and so, simply because of that need, Hannah knew she would do whatever was asked of her in order to help him. She was, however, rather confused by his regard toward her, for with his looks and smiles of late, he told her that there was something growing in his heart for her, but with his words he told her quite the opposite. It was as if he did not want to say a single word to her about what his intentions might be toward her once this whole ghastly business was brought to a close, as though he found it much too terrifying to consider.
He was, of course, like no other gentleman of her acquaintance, in the fact that he did not seem to want to pursue her, did not so much as want to enamor himself toward her. He was quiet and contemplative, always putting a great deal of consideration into what it was he was going to say, and Hannah found that she very much enjoyed that about him. Their conversations were always something she appreciated, for he did not treat her as though she were some dim-witted female, as so many other gentlemen did, clearly expecting her to care about more than just painting, dancing and other female pursuits. For that, she had grown to appreciate him all the more, finding herself growing more and more delighted with each moment they spent together.
It also was quite certain that she found him rather attractive for a gentleman of her acquaintance, although it had not come upon her as quickly as it had done with Martha. Not that she knew what to do with such a feeling, however, having never taken much interest in any gentlemen before. It was as if they had all treated her with such fawning devotion that was nothing more than a veneer.
âThere he is,â she heard Lord Patton whisper, as they walked together through the crowd of guests â some of whom were holding glasses of champagne and others who were in search of said refreshments. Swallowing her anxiety and determined to put on a strong front, Hannah lifted her chin and gazed directly at the formidable appearance of Lord Walton, recalling just how much she had disliked him the first time they had met.
âLord Walton, how good to see you,â she lied, putting on a light smile. âI did not expect you to be in London. Is your wife with you?â
Lord Walton did not smile, his eyes lingering on her for a moment before he sniffed almost disparagingly and looked away.
